Huskies Win Pair At Northeast Duals
ALBANY, NY-- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team won two matches and lost one on Saturday at the Northeast Duals in Albany, NY. The Huskies beat the University of Michigan by a score of 18-17; downed Columbia University, 20-13, before losing to Central Michigan, 23-15.
In the Michigan match the Huskies five of the first six matches to jump out to an 18-7 lead, then had to hang on over the final four bouts to post the one point victory.
Jason Guffey got things going with a 6-2 win at 125 pounds. After a loss at 133, Frank Hickman scored a 4-3 decision at 141pounds, with Josh Roosa posting an 8-4 win at 149 pounds. All-American and fifth-ranked Matt Moley extended the Huskies lead to 15-4 with a win by fall at 157 pounds, while at 165 Rick Schmelyun scored a 7-2 decision over 19th-ranked Aaron Hynes to make it 18-4. The Wolverines would win the final four bouts, but the Huskies pulled out the one point victory.
Against Columbia, the Huskies dropped the first two matches to fall behind 7-0. Bloomsburg though rallied with wins in the next three bouts to go up 10-7. Hickman and Roosa got things going with identical 6-5 wins. Moley then posted a major decision at 157 to put the Huskies on top. After a Huskies loss at 165, Nate Graham won 3-2 at 174, while Derrick Coffey won by major decision at 184 for a 17-10 lead. At 197 pounds, Brian Shaw earned the Huskies final points with a 2-0 win.
In the match with 10th-ranked Central Michigan, the Huskies trailed early by an 11-0 score. But once again, Hickman got the Huskies going with a win by major decision, 13-2, at 141 pounds. After a loss at 149, Moley posted a win by technical fall to cut the deficit to 14-9. At 165 pounds Schmelyun made it a two-point match with a 5-3 victory. The Chippewas though came back and won three of the final four matches to win by a score of 23-15.
For the day, Hickman and Moley were both three-time winners for the Huskies, now 4-2 on the season Bloomsburg will wrestle next week at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships at Edinboro University.
